Testosterone production has increased significantly during this phase of life and leads to stimulation of the sebaceous glands of the skin, which causes the glands to produce more sebum (an oily secretion that is).

The sebaceous glands around the hair follicles (hair through which develops from these tube-like structures) and excess sebum is normally released by hair follicles. In some cases, this excess sebum or oil clogs the hair follicles creating these blocked hair follicles also called comedones that pave the way for the development of acne and the early attempts to find effective remedies to eliminate the acne.

What Is Acne Vulgaris?

So what is acne? Acne is an immensely common skin condition that affects people of all ages and has a broad range of levels in regards to severity. The scientific term for acne is acne vulgaris, which literally means, "common acne." There has been a significant amount of controversy as to the exact cause of acne; for instance, dermatologists once claimed that eating greasy foods and chocolate was to blame for pimples.

More recent research has suggested that hormonal fluctuation in the body may be the main cause of acne, such as during puberty, pregnancy, menstruation, and times of stress when the skin tends to be more oily. When dead skin cells and sebum (the natural oil produced by glands in the skin) clog pores, acne forms and can become quite severe if left untreated. Fortunately, there are various treatment methods, from facial cleansers with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, to natural remedies like tea-tree oil and apple cider vinegar. Some of them are more effective than others and some will be effective for some people and not to others. It depends of what kind of acne you have.

How Is Acne Usually Treated?

Dermatologists generally recommend to begin treating acne with a dailyskin care regimen before utilizing the more extreme or hazardous modes of treatment, such as laser therapy or dermabrasion. A daily skin careregimen is essential for preventing and treating acne, as well as maintaining a proper balance of oil within the skin. Acne begins forming about 90 days before it actually appears above the surface of the skin, which means that even during times when no acne can be seen, a dailyskin care regimen should still be strictly adhered to. An example of a basicskin care routine is as follows:
  1. Choose a mild facial cleanser depending on the severity of acne and wash in the morning and at night.
  2. After each washing, pat dry and apply a toner or astringent to the entire face with a cotton ball and let dry.
  3. Apply an acne medication cream or gel directly to any pimples or the entire face if needed.
  4. If dryness becomes a problem after a few days, begin applying an oil-free moisturizer as a fourth step.
  5. For body acne, choose an exfoliating acne body wash and implement during every shower or bath.
Not all acne products are created equal, and each person reacts differently to certain acne medications, which means it may take some trial and error for an individual to locate an effective acne treatment. In addition, it can take upwards of a few weeks to a month before substantial results are experienced. After such treatment has been tried and failed, it may be time to make an appointment with a dermatologist who can devise an acne treatment specifically tailored for each patient.

What if you just can't get rid of your acne?

I know how hard it can be to get rid of acne, but if you really want to get rid of your acne you need to learn some strategies that work amazingly well.

Topical treatments for Acne

Benzoyl peroxide and azelaic acid
  • Start with low concentration products applied daily or on alternate days to minimise irritation, this is increased up to a maximum of twice daily application.

Topical retinoids
  • Retinoids (tretinoin, isotretinoin, or adapalene) can initially worsen acne and irritate skin but this is temporary. Irritation should settle after a few days and worsening of acne should resolve in a few weeks.
  • Female patients – Retinoids should not be used in pregnancy and contraception is needed during use and for 1 month following treatment

Acne Vulgaris- Causes and cures

Acne has always been a headache for teenagers. Even one breakout can cause so much depression, than what will face full of breakouts will cause, is beyond imagination. But there are some adolescents who suffer from acute acne problem. In adolescence, acne is usually caused by an increase in testosterone, which people of both genders accrue during puberty.

Acne affects mostly skin with the densest population of sebaceous follicles; these areas include the face, the upper part of the chest, and the back. Severe acne is inflammatory, but acne can also manifest in no inflammatory forms. The lesions are caused by changes in pilosebaceous units, skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland, changes that require androgen stimulation.

There are many types of Acne:
•    Whiteheads - remain under the skin and are very small.
•    Blackheads - clearly visible, they are black and appear on the surface of the skin. A blackhead is not caused by dirt so scrubbing your face vigorously when you see blackheads will not help.
•    Papules - visible on the surface of the skin. They are small bumps, usually pink.
•    Pustules - clearly visible on the surface of the skin. They are red at their base and have pus at the top.
•    Nobules - clearly visible on the surface of the skin. They are large, solid pimples. They are painful and are embedded deep in the skin.
•    Cysts - clearly visible on the surface of the skin. They are painful, and are filled with pus. Cysts can easily cause scars.Acne develops as a result of blockages in follicles or sebaceous gland. Causes of Acne Vulgaris are:

•    Genetic: The tendency to develop acne runs in families. For example, school aged boys with acne often have other members in their family with acne. A family history of acne is associated with an earlier occurrence of acne and an increased number of retentional acne lesions.
•    Diet: high glycemic load diet is associated with worsening acne. There is also an association between the consumption of milk and the rate and severity of acne. Other associations such as chocolate and salt are not supported by the evidence. However, products with these ingredients often contain a high glycemic load.
•    Hormonal: Hormonal activity, such as menstrual cycles and puberty, may contribute to the formation of acne. During puberty, an increase in male sex hormones called androgens causes the follicular glands to grow larger and make more sebum. True Acne Vulgaris in adult women may be a feature of an underlying condition such as pregnancy and disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome or the rare Cushing's syndrome. Menopause-associated acne occurs as production of the natural anti-acne ovarian hormone estradiol fails at menopause.
•    Psychological: increased stress levels can also increase acne problem.

Treatment of mild acne is possible by using products containing following active ingredients:
•    Resorcinol
•    Benzoyl Peroxide
•    Salicylic acid
•    Sulfur
•    Retin-A
•    Azelaic acid

But you should definitely go and see a good dermatologist or a skin specialist for proper diagnose of your problem. Some mild acne becomes severe in later stage so you should consult dermatologist for proper treatment before it gets worse.
